Gertrude Joyce (Young) Burkett

Gertrude Joyce (Young) Burkett, age 82, of Brookville, PA, passed away at her home on April 26, 2023, in Brookville, PA.

She was born to the late John and Nellie (Byerly) Young in Beaver Township, PA, on February 3, 1941.

On November 30, 1962, she married Harold Burkett, and they spent over 46 loving years together before he preceded her in death in March of 2009.

She attended Brookville Area High School. Gertrude worked at G.C. Murphy Co., and Brookville Glove in Brookville, PA. For a while, Gertrude took time off to be a caring and loving mother who raised her family. She then returned to work at the Punxsutawney High School before she became the US Postmaster at the Timblin Post Office in Timblin, PA. She worked there for fifteen years before retiring in 2006.

She was a member and devoted Christian at the Brookville Evangelical Methodist Church in Brookville, PA. She enjoyed baking and reading as the years went on. Later in life, she found a new joy in computer games and Facebook. Gertrude loved watching the Pittsburgh Pirates play baseball. Above all, she loved her family.    

Gertrude is survived by two sons; Gregory (Melaine) Burkett of Newport News, VA, and Michael (Robin) Burkett of Kane, PA; one granddaughter; Meghan (Miles) Sheahan of Grape View, WA; two step grandchildren; Cody Gravely of St. Mary’s, PA, and Brianna Gravely of Kane, PA; one great-grandchild; four step great-grandchildren; and one brother; Ronald (Linda) Young of Summerville, PA.  

In addition to her parents and husband, Gertrude is preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Family and friends will be received on Saturday, April 29, 2023, from 1 pm until 3 pm, at the Carrier Funeral Home, 2834 Maplevale Rd., Brookville, PA 15825. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, April 29, 2023, following the viewing beginning at 3:00 pm, and officiated by Rev. Mr. Loren McQueen. Interment will take place privately at Lakelawn Memorial Park, Winslow Twp., Jefferson Co., PA.

Memorial contributions may be made in Gertrude’s name to the Brookville Evangelical United Methodist Church, 30 S. White St., Brookville, PA 15825.
