James Leroy Mason

James Leroy Mason, age 86, of Hazen, PA, died on Friday, June 2, 2023, at the McKinley Health Center in Brookville, PA, following a brief illness. He was born on March 29, 1937, in Brookville, a son of the late Lawrence and Charlotte (Fuller) Mason. Jim attended Brookville High School. Over the years he worked making cabinets for mobile homes, in surveying, and as a millwright. He also worked at Humphrey Charcoal in Brookville. 

He was a lifelong member of the F.O.E. 983 in Brookville. He enjoyed spending time with his friends, camping, watching the birds, and taking care of his cats, especially Blackie and Tigger. He also enjoyed parking cars for the Hazen flea market. For many years he delighted young and old alike with his appearances as Santa Claus.

Jim is survived by one son, Brian (Kathy) Mason of Newport News, VA; and four grandchildren: Michelle (Michael) Chandler, Matthew Mason, Molly (Steven) Swartz, all of Newport News, and Michael (Shelly) Mason of Hampton, VA. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren: Hailey Chandler and Emily Swartz of Newport News, and Nicole, Nathaniel and Evelyn Mason of Hampton.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a son, Mark Lee Mason, and two brothers: Gerald Mason and Larry Mason.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m., on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at the Carrier Funeral Home, 2834 Maplevale Rd., Brookville, PA 15825. A memorial service also will be held on June 14, at the funeral home, beginning at 6 p.m., with Pastor Patti Slaughter officiating.
